Check in at Port Denarau, Nadi between 7.00–7.15am, before departing at 7.30am for the spectacular Yasawa Islands. By 8.30am, you’ll arrive at Kuata Island — welcomed with breakfast overlooking dramatic volcanic peaks rising from turquoise waters.
This exclusive early departure unlocks something rare: 7.5 hours immersed in Kuata Island, its surrounding marine sanctuary and Fiji sharks!
During breakfast, you’ll meet your host for the day — one of Kuata Island’s in-house marine biologists — who will introduce you to the island’s ongoing shark research and conservation programme and outline the extraordinary experiences ahead.
The Awakening Shark Dive — A World-Class Apex Encounter
At the heart of your expedition lies the legendary Awakening Shark Dive — one of the South Pacific’s most compelling big-shark experiences. Designed by marine biologist Dr Thomas Vignaud, PhD, and developed over three years of dedicated research and planning, this experience was engineered to balance raw adrenaline with ecological integrity and uncompromising safety standards.
Following a detailed briefing and professional dive equipment fitting, you will depart for Yawake Reef. Conducted at 12 metres, this dive places certified divers face-to-face with powerful Bull Sharks (Carcharhinus leucas) in a controlled yet exhilarating setting.
Encounters frequently include multiple individuals moving confidently through the water column, sometimes joined by Lemon Sharks, Silvertip Sharks and Tawny Nurse Sharks — creating a dynamic and unforgettable underwater theatre. Now operating for over 13 years, the dive adheres to strict ecological best practice to ensure no negative impact on shark behaviour. A professional Barefoot Shark Encounters team closely monitors diver positioning and shark movement at all times.
This is not a distant viewing experience — it is an immersive, close-proximity encounter allowing divers to witness apex predators in their natural domain, framed by the dramatic volcanic seascape of the Yasawas. Proceeds from the dive contribute directly to ongoing shark conservation research and to the Namara Primary School on nearby Waya Lai Lai Island ensuring every descent supports both ocean and community.
After returning to shore, you’ll have time to freshen up and enjoy lunch overlooking the ocean.
Education & SSI Shark Ecology Certification
Following lunch, your marine biologist host delivers an engaging Shark Ecology session, exploring shark behaviour, ecosystem dynamics, predator-prey relationships and the critical role sharks play in maintaining reef resilience and ocean balance. Guests are then introduced to the SSI Shark Ecology programme, with certificates issued later in the afternoon — recognising your participation in a science-led marine conservation experience.
Reef Shark Snorkelling Experience — Surface Encounters at Moia Reef
The expedition continues at nearby Moia Reef, where crystal-clear waters between 4–6 metres provide exceptional visibility and active reef shark habitat. Escorted by one of Kuata Island’s in-house marine biologists, this guided snorkelling experience offers a rare opportunity to observe resident Blacktip and Whitetip Reef Sharks from the surface — complementing the depth and intensity of the Awakening Shark Dive.
Multiple reef sharks are commonly seen patrolling coral bommies and weaving through vibrant reef structures. From above, their body language, movement patterns and interactions become strikingly visible, o?ering a di?erent scientific and behavioural perspective.
Throughout the session, your marine biologist interprets what you are witnessing in real time — explaining hunting strategies, habitat use, social dynamics and the vital ecological role reef sharks play as mesopredators. By regulating fish populations and supporting trophic cascades, reef sharks help strengthen coral reef resilience and longterm ecosystem health.
Together, the dive and snorkelling experience provide a layered understanding of shark ecology — from apex predators at 12 metres to reef guardians in the shallows.
Later, enjoy time at leisure — snorkelling vibrant coral gardens directly from Kuata’s beachfront, relaxing on the sand, or simply absorbing the energy of the Yasawas. At 3.45pm, longboats transfer you to your return ferry, arriving back at Port Denarau at 6.00pm.This is not simply a day cruise.
It is a fully immersive marine expedition — combining adventure, science, conservation and meaningful impact in one extraordinary day in Fiji’s Yasawa Islands.
